Read Your Heart Out

Summer's over but its spirit still lives on in this series of photographs from designer Ben Denzer. Over the past year, Denzer has taken to the streets with a number of classic novels and contemporary titles armed with a camera and sheets of colorful paper. He’s partnered with ice cream shops across New York to drip, drizzle, and otherwise adorn books with treats like scoops of Thai iced tea cream to fresh soft serve swirls and chocolate milkshakes. Bright, splashy, and colorful: Ice Cream Books are the cream of the crop.

The Phoenix
Geposted von nathan am
After a wildfire blazed through Wyoming’s Casper Mountain in 2013, 37 buildings were left in ashes—including Eric Logan’s cabin, which had served as a retreat for his family since the 70s. However, like the mythological phoenix rising from its ashes, the cabin rose from the ashes when the architect designed and erected a new building on the foundation that was left behind. The blueprint was tailored to the family’s personal needs: Without electricity, running water, or cellular service, the Phoenix was designed to highlight the boundless nature that surrounded it. Wide windows flank the single volume, which is capped by a wood-burning stove for warmth and cooking. Charred timber frames the home, offering a beautiful but solemn reminder of the holiday house's history.

When we last took a look at the neatly organized work of Danish photographer Mikkel Jul Hvilshøj, he had broken down classic recipes into grid-based visuals for homeware studio Eva Solo. Two years later and Hvilshøj hasn’t strayed far from his roots: The artist continues to organize shopping lists into tasty rubrics ready for consumption from his studio in Copenhagen. His latest pieces include a tender steak, breaded flounder, and a classic Christmas Glühwein. Browse the series below, or check out our book Visual Feast for a taste of what food stylists, photographers, and designers are cooking up around the world.
A House on the Pasture

Tucked away on a wide-open prairie in Dalarna, Sweden, this modified A-frame house from Leo Qvarsebo was made for taking it slow. The summer home’s south-facing side features a number of picture-glass windows overlooking the expansive plains and bathing the interior with unobstructed light. However, the interior offers privacy away from the great outdoors: Staircases spanning from the foundation to the upper attic offer cozier corners and secluded spaces for quite times indoors.

Architectural Pastries and Cakes
Geposted von nathan am
Architecture is an art of measurements, and so is baking. While some might consider juxtaposing the two to be an untraditional pairing, pastry chef Dinara Kasko disagrees. In fact, her practice stems from a degree in architecture, which surely comes in handy with her precision-cut cakes, biscuits, and other sweets. Using 3-D printers and bespoke cake molds, Kasko bakes pastries into radical shapes, then layering on chocolates or bright and shiny glazes that belie each creation’s spongey core. The result? A portfolio of pastries pushing the boundaries of edible sculptures.
